Fairhope High School - Mr. Tim Yahr
Fairhope High School - Mr. Tim Yahr

friDAY 11/15/19

Watched videos about tradesmen and specifically electricians.

1.  On the GO BUILD ALABAMA website watch two videos.

    a.  30 sec video "The Future is for Workers."

    b.  3min 15sec video "Electrician".

2.  YouTube video on "How to Install an Electrical Outlet".

3.  Some things we learned about electrician work today are:

   a.  Larger numbers mean smaller wires.

   b.  The black wire is the "hot" wire and connects to the brass-colored screw on the outlet.

   c.  The white wire is the "neutral" wire and connects to the silver-colored screw on the outlet.

   d.  The bare copper wire is the "ground" wire and connects t the green-colored screw on the outlet.

   e.  The ground wire isn't insulated because it does not have to be because the other wires are.  Since they are insulated the bare ground wire can not contact the other wires.  Being bare therefore makes the wiring cheaper and also makes it easy to recognize the ground wire.

f.  Make sure your connections are tight.  Loose connectons can cause fire.

Also prepared for the Agriculture and Natural Resources test next week.

1.  Reasons why organic gardening can be better than gardening with chemicals.

a.  Improved taste - two good reasons are 1:  chefs feel organic is better tasting and 2:  organically grown food has a longer shelf life.

b.  Save money - You don't have to purchase expensive pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers.

c.  Improved nutrition - Studies show organically grown vegetables have more nutrients.

d.  Chemical exposure - Organically grown vegetables are not covered with chemical pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers.

e.  Environmental impact - two good reasons are 1:  Not introducing chemicals to the ecosystem and 2:  Not supporting commercial production of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides.

f.  Beneficial insects - Not killing beneficial insects like bees and ladybugs with pesticides and other residue.

2.  You will need to decide on your 6 tips for successful indoor gardening.  You will write down your tips and explain them.  One of your tips must be CULLING and the others you can choose.  WATERING may NOT be one of the tips.  Most of you did not give your reasons much information.  You need to have enough information to be helpful to a person new to gardening.  Below is an example of one tip with good information.

TIP #1 -> TEMPERATURE.  Choose your seeds for the correct temperatures.  Some seeds like warmer soil (like marigolds) and others are OK with colder soils (like radishes).  To warm up your indoor plants you might use a greenhouse, or put them in a sunny window, or use a heater.

3.  Discussing government and the Fairhope sewage problem.

a.  1.  The city of Fairhope needed concerned citizens to find a sewage problem.

a.  2.  The city hired scuba divers to investigate the problem and plan possible solutions.

a.  3.  The City Council voted wheter or not to hire Volkert to fix the problem.

b.  1.  Fairhope's beach is the #1 dirtiest beach in Alabama.

b.  2.  US Senator Doug Jones wants to spend federal money to improve data collecting and sharting among governments.

b.  3.  US Rep Bradley Byrne hosted roundtable discussions with area officials regarding clean water concerns.

c.  1.  The city of Fairhope had medallions put on each sewer.  The medallions are hard to read and have a confusing message.
